You (me) On a Diet

by John on July 18, 2010

Are Anti-Weight & Anti-Dieting Good for Anti-Aging?

I was up in Northern Michigan again last week and managed to watch Geneen Roth on Oprah. I really enjoyed the question & answer format of the show. I was in Borders a week or so ago and noticed Geneen’s book – Women, Food & God was not on the top shelf of the bookcase anymore – it had a whole display to itself at the front of the store! Way to go Geneen!

Livestrong @ 60

Take a Hint from Lance and Livestrong

I mentioned earlier that I had purchased over $200 worth of t-shirts before the weight started dropping. A couple of those were Lance Armstrong’s LiveSTRONG brand. The brand name appealed to me as does the cause.

Nutrigenomics Revolutionizing Personal Wellness

DNA Research Continues to Revolutionize Health & Wellness

The nutrigenomics age is upon us, creating exciting opportunities in the health & wellness industries.

Five decades ago, we learned that DNA is a double helix. Less than a decade ago, the human genome was published. We now know that DNA plays a dynamic, active role in our daily lives. Certain food substances have been identified that turn on or turn off genes.

Weight – Gains, Loss and Plateaus

June 24, 2010

Gaining Back Weight and Making the 180

I had a few good meals last weekend accompanied with a couple glasses of wine. It didn’t surprise me when the scale went from 224.5 to 226.5, but when it hit 228.5, I knew it was time for a commitment check-up.

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms – SNPs

June 23, 2010

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) Research Exploding

There is a revolution going on in genetic (DNA) research that is changing the course of medicine, anthropology, genealogy, pharmacology and health & wellness.

Ten years ago, population geneticists could study only relatively simple genetic configurations from the Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA. Since then, there has been a revolution in the methodology available for this kind of study so that now scientists are examining the most complex areas of an individual’s complete nuclear DNA. Using what is called “admixture mapping,” they look at thousands of variant SNPs (pronounced “snips” for single nucleotide polymorphisms) revealing the subtlest influences on an individual’s genetic makeup.

Weight Loss – June 16

June 16, 2010

17 Pounds Weight Loss

On June 15, 2010 the scale is reading 226.5, that’s a loss of 17 pounds so far. I’ve sent two pair of slacks to Goodwill and this Friday, I will be giving about $1500 of Tommy Bahama XXL shirts to a friend.

I thought that 226 pounds would find me fitting into some clothes that are still too tight. I guess my memory isn’t as accurate as I thought.I’m now thinking that 5 years ago I must have been down around 222 pounds. No worries though, my focus isn’t on losing weight as a priority as much as a lifestyle change. It’s a great feeling to be losing weight at a steady pace.

The Science of Nutrigenomics: Diet & Personalized Wellness

Nutrigenomics is a relatively new science that has been getting a lot of attention recently. Scientists for the first time are discovering that the foods we eat affect how our genes function.

You can access a lot of information and research online about Nutrigenomics or Nutrigenetics – it’s fun reading!

A recent study from scientists in Spain has found that “increased intakes of fruit and vegetables may decrease markers of inflammation linked to a range of chronic diseases”:

Nutrigenomics or Nutrigenetics = DNA Diet

June 9, 2010

Nutrigenomics or Nutrigenetics Spells “Diet” with DNA

Nutrigenomics or nutrigenetics is a new field of study in diet and nutrition. You might call this the DNA Diet.

Studies are emerging that show the promise of nutrigenomics — the science of how your genes interact with food. At Stanford University, researchers assigned 138 overweight and obese women to either a low-fat or low-carb diet, depending on their genes. Those assigned the right diet for their genotype lost five times as much weight. DNA assessing is at the forefront of research in the fields of medicine, health, nutrition and pharmacology. Knowing the specifics of a person’s DNA will help professionals in these wellness fields to target an individual’s bio-chemistry with customized wellness products, be that medication or nutritional supplements.

DNA – Anti-aging Secret – Bye Bye Wrinkles

June 7, 2010

DNA Holds the Key to Anti-Aging

Our body is never the same one day to the next – and – it is always aging. Everyday our cells are replicating and everyday the aging process is at work. One of the critical components influencing the aging process is our DNA. As our cells replicate under the direction of our DNA small mutations can occur in the process of replicating the DNA and other components of the cells. Your DNA holds one of the keys to anti-aging, optimal aging, maintaining youth or AgeLESSing – Aging Less.
